A Syrian artist and one of the foremost pioneers of artistic modernism in Syria, Mahmoud Hammad was also a founder of the Arab Abstraction movement. He began his artistic career painting landscapes before moving towards abstract expression, incorporating Arabic letters as a visual element. He studied in Italy and later returned to Damascus, where he contributed to the establishment of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Damascus University, leaving a lasting impact on the Syrian and Arab art scenes.
