It was later renamed the Red Crescent Society. The establishment of the Society was the brainchild of a group of women, led by Sara Hanoun. The Society provides health and social services and runs several important centres, such as the Ambulance and Emergency Center, which was established in 1989, the Childhood Orphanage (Childhood Protection Center), which was established in 1981, the nursery, the Department of Physiotherapy, and the Red Crescent Society Hospital.
