BIOGRAPHY

Fahd al-Qawasmi is one of the national symbols that played a major political role from the mid-1970s until his assassination in 1984. Al-Qawasmi participated in the municipal elections in 1976 and was the lead candidate of the National Bloc list in Hebron and won the mayoral elections, becoming the first elected mayor of Hebron. He fought, along with the municipal mayors of the West Bank, the settlement wave and the Israeli Occupation's policies of imposing its control on and oppressing the Palestinians in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip. In 1980, the Israeli Occupation Authorities deported him from Palestine, and he resided in Jordan. He was elected as a member of the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organisation during the 17th session of the National Council in 1984, and in the same year, he was assassinated by the Israeli Occupation.
