"Notes from 1967", an Article by Bassam ash-Shakʿa

Handwritten by Bassam ash-Shakʿa, this three-page article addresses a collection of events that occurred following the 1967 Palestinian war (Naksa): Israel’s reaction to Egypt declaring to close the Straits of Tiran in 1967 and having the Multinational Force and Observers remove its observation post from the Straits; the role of popular committees formed in Nablus by the city’s mayor, Hamdi Kanʿan, in facing up to the Israeli occupation’s policies; Palestinian municipalities refusing the Israeli self-rule and civil administration policies; the decision to exile ash-Shakʿa in 1979 after receiving a threat from Israel’s Minister of Defense at the time for supporting popular demonstrations made against a planned visit for Anwar as-Sadat to al-Quds (Jerusalem); an attempt to assassinate the mayors if Nablus, Ramallah and al-Bireh in 1980; and closing down municipalities for disapproving of the Israeli civil administration.
