Anwar Nusseibeh's Objection to the Law Allowing the Bearing of Arms, November 1953
Issued in Amman on 6 November 1953, this objection was issued by Anwar Zaki Nusseibeh against an amendment issued by the government allowing civilians to carry arms, where Nusseibeh wondered whether this amendment aimed to promote the arms trade or to prevent the recurrence of the “painful Qibya incident” without addressing the narration of the incident. Then, he wrote six reasons to support his position to stop this amendment, such as his fear of the spread of murder in society, especially because of revenge. After which, he added that allowing the people of the front lines to bear arms in order to defend the borders against the Jews is an explicit recognition of the government’s inability to protect its borders, especially since this is a duty on the government and not individuals, and therefore, the government needs international protection for its borders.
