A Special Edition of "The Jerusalem Times" on Christmas, Jerusalem-Jordan, 1963

Printed in English, this document includes a special edition of "The Jerusalem Times" on the occasion of Christmas of 1963, a daily and political newspaper issued by al-Jihad House of Press in Jerusalem. The cover of this 64-page issue shows a drawing of King Hussein bin Talal and behind him a building of a church and a Christmas tree, in which "The Jerusalem Times" thanks everyone who contributed and supported its publication and extends best wishes to all readers on the occasion of Christmas, stressing that the newspaper will return as usual on Sunday, 29 December 1963, after the end of the holidays. At the beginning of this issue, the browser reads an article written by Rawhi al-Khatib, the mayor of Jerusalem at the time, and it was originally part of a speech he had given at the Rotary Club in Jerusalem on 15 May 1963, in which he spoke about the tragedy of its Arab people during the 1948 war and the consequences of the end of the British mandate over Palestine, summing a total of 15 years of suffering. The newspaper then attaches a picture of the Gethsemane Church in Jerusalem, showing the surrounding gardens and how its flowers grow throughout the year, in addition to several advertisements for airlines and travel and tourism centres all over the pages. The last devotes a full page, displaying a map of the "Holy City", and below it is a list of tourist information centres in Jordan, followed by an advertising space for the Ottoman Bank and the Rafidain Bank. Then, "The Jerusalem Times" praises the cities of Jericho and Ramallah as a tourist destination at this time of the year due to the warm weather in each of them, as Ramallah, which had a population of 60,000 people at the time, was classified as a summer resort with dozens of visitors, while in another article written by its governor, Boulos Saba, he described it as “the perfect resting place for the weary traveller.” Returning to the main axis of the newspaper, an article was devoted to the pilgrimage in Bethlehem and a historical introduction to the birth of Christ, peace be upon him. On its last pages, Anwar Nusseibeh writes an article titled "They are God's Gifts" in which he talks about his view of Christmas and how he uses this time of year to reflect and think on the religious and social levels.
