Abdel-Rahman al-Haj Ibrahim Diaries, Tulkarm, 1933

Handwritten between 1 January and 31 December 1933, this document shows the diaries of Abdel-Rahman al-Haj Ibrahim for the year 1933, where he detailed his family and social life as the mayor of Tulkarm. According to their subject, the diaries were divided into three sections, where al-Haj Ibrahim recorded the most important activities. For one, he wrote about his ownership of the Faza orchard on the seashore near the city of Tulkarm and the village of Umm Khaled, where he recorded the accounts and expenses of workers and artisans’ wages, the works of carpentry and tiling, and installing an iron fence around the orchard. While one of the most important things mentioned in this diary is that he started building a house for his son Samir. At the top of some pages, he wrote down a description of his health and the expenses of his home and family. Al-Hajj Ibrahim was also keen to write down the days when he went to conduct business in the municipality of Tulkarm, and his attendance at the meetings of the municipal council, the committees of roads, education, city cleaning, scouting and building inspection, in addition to discussing the issue of the city’s organization project with specialists, participating in the auction of selling the municipality’s kerosene burner, receiving the high commissioner, and supervising the work of the kindergarten, the primary school and the agricultural school.
