Abdel-Rahman al-Haj Ibrahim Diaries, Tulkarm, 1936
Handwritten between 1 January and 31 December 1936, this document shows the diaries of Abdel-Rahman al-Haj Ibrahim for the year 1936, where he detailed his family and social life as the mayor of Tulkarm. According to their subject, the diaries were divided into three sections, where al-Haj Ibrahim recorded the most important activities. For one, he wrote about his ownership of the Faza orchard on the seashore near the city of Tulkarm and the village of Umm Khaled, where he recorded the accounts and expenses of planting trees and seedlings, and purchasing fertilizers and agricultural equipment. He also mentioned visiting several Palestinian cities and villages, including Haifa, Jerusalem, Yafa, Nablus, Samakh and Tiberias, in addition to writing a description of his health on top of some of the pages. In this diary, al-Hajj Ibrahim devoted a large part of his notes to talking about the great strike and the Great Palestinian Revolution of 1936, including that the city of Tulkarm participated in the strike on 1 June and continued until 12 October 1936. He also wrote notes, more than once, about demonstrations in Tulkarem, the most important of which was the demonstration that took place on 15 May 1936 and was attended by many people from villages and towns adjacent to the city. Moreover, he jotted down several of the events occurring during the demonstrations including the meetings he attended regarding Bani Sa’b and Palestine and participating in the conference held by Prince Abdullah in Amman. Al-Hajj Ibrahim was keen to write down the days he went to do business in the municipality of Tulkarem, his attendance at the meetings of the municipal council, the inspection of the municipality’s slaughterhouse, the formation of an endowment committee, the discussion of the issue of compensation for the Sabiya road (an area near Kfar Saba), the supervision of the municipal garden arrangements, and the attendance of the municipalities’ conference and follow-up of the water project.
