Abdel-Rahman al-Haj Ibrahim Diaries, Tulkarm, 1938
Handwritten between 1 January and 31 December 1938, this document shows the diaries of Abdel-Rahman al-Haj Ibrahim, where he left some empty, and in others detailed his family and social life as the mayor of Tulkarm. According to their subject, the diaries were divided into three sections, where al-Haj Ibrahim recorded the most important activities. For one, he wrote about his ownership of the Faza orchard on the seashore near the city of Tulkarm and the village of Umm Khaled, where he also recorded accounts and expenses related to the process of planting trees and saplings, purchasing fertilizers and agricultural equipment and some notes on cooperation with orange merchants in Yafa. He also spoke of the assault of Mandate forces soldiers on the two of his orchard farmers. He wrote about his visit to a number of cities, including Haifa, Jerusalem, Ramleh and Yafa, and wrote at the top of some pages a description of his health. He also jotted down notes on the events of the revolution, the strike, and the refusal of merchants and notables to meet and bid farewell to the resigned High Commissioner. Among the most important things that came in these notes were the shootings and clashes between the revolutionaries and the soldiers of the British Mandate, and the imposition of a curfew there. He also talked about the incident of storming the city and arresting more than a hundred young men and his interrogation in Nablus by the Mandate authorities. Haj Ibrahim was also keen to write down the days he went to do business in the municipality of Tulkarm, attending the various meetings, supervising the municipal garden arrangements, approving the education budget and the decision to establish a market for animals, referring the wastewater tender and following up on the water project, and he also made notes about the repeated attacks on the municipality and its workers.
