Bassam Shakaa in Paris, 1980

Taken in 1980, this photograph shows Bassam Shakaa, mayor of Nablus, holding a press conference at Hotel de Crillon upon his arrival to Paris at the official invitation of the French President Valery d'Estaing as part of Shakaa's trip abroad to receive treatment, in the wake of the Israeli Occupation Authorities' attempt to assassinate him, leading to the amputation of his legs on 2 June of the same year. Ahmad Abdoun, director of the Office of the League of Arab States in Paris, several Arab diplomats, and UNESCO Director appear in the photograph.
