A Horoscopes Book by Suliman Hasri, Baqa al-Gharbiyye, 1900
Handwritten in Arabic, this horoscopes book is by Suliman Yousef Abderrahim Radwan al-Hasri “al-Badi”, where the family of al-Hasri settled in Baqa al-Gharbiyye and other Palestinian cities and villages during the entrance of Muhammad Ali Pasha in 1832, and they are a part of the “al-Hasri” family in Egypt. Al-Badi was a distinguished speaker in Baqa al-Gharbiyye as he was always requested to speak at all sorts of occasions, therefore the name al-Badi “the Starter”, since then, his family was known as “the family of Anis al-Badi”. Al-Badi knew much of the history, lineage and facts of Baqa al-Gharbiyye, as Mohammad Rashid as-Safa, the grandson of Suliman al-Badi, visited his grandfather’s shop continuously to learn from him when his grandfather gifted him the aforementioned horoscopes book, which he wrote in his youth around the year 1900. This Science of Horoscopes book contains 101 pages and is covered in leather. Al-Badi introduced his book by mentioning horoscopes in general, people, religion and Quran, the introduction also contains magic, talismans and amulets, where there are several tables with letters and half words. He then goes on to speak of the Science of Horoscopes and the method to calculate each horoscope, where the calculations require the name of the person and his mother’s. In the first section of the book, al-Badi describes each detail of the horoscope regarding males, where he describes every man of every horoscope including astronomical details, as in describing each horoscope and its compatibility with other horoscopes. The first horoscope sign is Aries, a fire sign with Mars as its fortune, the day Tuesday, from the “Roman” months, i.e. the Gregorian calendar, April, from the Arabic months Muharram, the number of days in this month are thirty days and Aries people are characterized by anger, speed of contentment and patience. The second horoscope sign is Taurus, an earth sign with Venus as its fortune, the day Friday, May from the Georgian Calendar and Safar from the Arabian, the number of days in this month are 30 and Taurus people are characterized by being fast to anger and contentment, love air and rapture and are very generous at the beginning of their lives. The third horoscope sign is Gemini, an air sign with Mercury as its fortune, the day Wednesday, June from the Georgian Calendar and Rabiʻ I from the Arabian, and Gemini people are characterized by chivalry and being sweet talkers, they also have a mole or a burn mark on their hand and shoulder, they mostly love the open-air and are joyful. The third horoscope sign is Cancer, a water sign with the moon as its fortune, the day Monday, July from the Georgian Calendar and Rabiʻ II from the Arabian, and Cancer people are characterized by speaking harshly if they are angered, closing their eyes when speaking and having a mole on the chest. The third horoscope sign is Leo, a fire sign with the sun as its fortune, the day Sunday, Jumada I from the Arabian months, and Leo people are characterized with cunning and deception. The third horoscope sign is Virgo, an earth sign with Mercury as its fortune, the day Friday, September from the Georgian Calendar and Jumada II from the Arabian, and Virgo people are characterized by being fast to anger and fast to please. The third horoscope sign is Libra, an air sign with Venus as its fortune, the day Friday, October from the Georgian Calendar and Rajab from the Arabian, and Libra people are characterized with beautiful faces and their love of family, relatives and friends. The third horoscope sign is Scorpio, a water sign with Mars as its fortune, the day Tuesday, November from the Georgian Calendar and Shaʻban from the Arabian and Scorpio people are characterized with generosity, speaking truth and refusing wrongdoings. The third horoscope sign is Sagittarius, a fire sign with Jupiter as its fortune, the day Friday, December from the Georgian Calendar and Ramadan from the Arabian, and Sagittarius people are characterized with having a mole on the knee, suffering from back pain and people being fond of them. The third horoscope sign is Capricorn, an earth sign with its fortune day as Friday, January from the Georgian Calendar and Shawwal from the Arabian, and Capricorn people are characterized with bravery, generosity and being fast to anger and fast to please. The third horoscope sign is Aquarius, a fire sign with Saturn as its fortune, the day Saturday, Dhuʻl-Qiʻdah from the Arabian months, and Aquarius people are characterized with pride, smiling faces and beautiful eyes. The third horoscope sign is Pisces with Jupiter as its fortune and Pisces people are characterized with kindness, generosity and a good soul, his life house is the Aries, his money house is the Taurus and his sibling house is Gemini, and he usually suffers financially at the beginning of his life. The second section of the book documents horoscopes and their relation to women, where he describes each woman of each horoscope, as for common descriptions of a horoscope such as their relation to planets, its existence in Arabian and Georgian calendars and its general characteristics due to them being common between genders with a difference in characteristics, meaning that each horoscope’s characteristics differ according to sex.
