Sunglasses of Shaheed Hussam Bakheet, from '100 Shaheed - 100 Lives' Exhibition, February 2001
Taken by photographer Isabel de la Cruz, this photograph shows sunglasses belonging to Shaheed Hussam Bakheet who was born in Balata refugee camp to a forcibly displaced family from Ras al-Ein village. Bakheet was fatally shot in the head during his participation in clashes erupted between Palestinians and Israeli forces near Yusuf Tomb. This item was displayed at the '100 Shaheed - 100 Lives' Exhibition held at the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Center in Ramallah on February 20, 2001. The idea of the exhibition emerged weeks after the eruption of the Second Intifada (Al-Aqsa Intifada) as a tribute to all those murdered in the struggle. However, as the number of Shaheeds was exponentially increasing, the exhibition was limited to honoring the first 100 Shaheeds representing all areas of Historic Palestine.
