Shaheed Zuheir Darabiyeh's "His Mother's Photograph" Displayed at the '100 Shaheed - 100 Lives' Exhibition, Feb 2001

Taken by Isabel de la Cruz, this photograph shows an item of "his mother's photograph" belonging to the shaheed Zuheir Darabiyeh. Darabiyeh was from the Palestinian Refugee Camp Jabalia, of a family that was forcibly displaced from Sumsum village which was demolished near Gaza. On October 7th, 2000, Darabiyeh was murdered when he was taking part in the confrontations near the Shuhada Junction (Netzarim). This item was displayed at the '100 Shaheed - 100 Lives' exhibition, held at the Khalil Sakakini Cultural Center in Ramallah on February 20, 2001. The idea of the exhibition emerged weeks after the outbreak of the Second Intifada (al-Aqsa Intifada) as a tribute to all those murdered in the struggle. However, as the number of shaheeds was exponentially increasing, the exhibition was limited to honoring the first 100 shaheeds representing all areas of Historic Palestine.
